HAIR CARE: MOISTURE AND PROTEIN BALANCE

Many people are not aware of the fact that their hair needs both moisture and protein in order to stay healthy and strong. They are confused about how they should make sure if they are giving their hair the right quantity of both protein and moisture. A moisture and protein balance is very important for hair growth, length retention and breakage prevention. A protein or moisture imbalance can result in split ends and hair breakage. Hair growth is mostly genetic but some external factors like moisture and protein imbalance affect it as well.
Does your hair need Moisture or Protein?
After you have washed your hair, find a hair that you have shed. Pull that hair lightly. If it breaks right away, your hair is in dire need of moisture and it the strand feels spongy or gummy, then your hair needs more protein.
Keeping the Hair Healthy
Proper hair care is definitely not easy, and maintaining the protein and moisture balance can be quite challenging.
The key is to moisturize the hair immediately after conditioning it. If your hair is dry, use the moisture cream and conditioner on your hair on a daily basis to retain the health and luster of your hair. Doing so will help one in maintaining the moisture and protein balance.
Generally, you do not need to wet your hair before conditioning and moisturizing it. Most people also do not know that over moisturizing can lead to hair breakage. If your hair feels softer and a little spongy when wet, chances are that your hair is over moisturized; in this case, you will have to balance all the moisture in your hair with protein.
Tips and Tricks
Never moisturize dirty hair as it does not help your hair at all. For effective moisturizing, one must make sure that their hair is clean before they attempt to moisturize it. When we are moisturizing our hair, we are basically aiming to let the moisture penetrate the strand right from its cuticle all the way to the cortex. So if there is a lot of buildup on the cuticle, the moisturizer will not be able to penetrate the shaft of your hair. This will eventually lead to excessive dryness and hair breakage.
People who frequently use shampoos and conditioners should be extra careful about properly washing their hair before attempting to moisturize it in order to get the desired results.
Things to Keep in Mind
A lot of people tend to assume that hair oils will help them in moisturizing their hair. Oil can be used to seal the moisture after you have moisturized it, but it does not completely moisturize the hair on its own. Water based moisturizers are better than oil based moisturizers because they penetrate the strands better. This is why it is suggested that one should generally stay away from all petroleum and mineral oil based moisturizers as it is harder for them to penetrate your strands.
